Researchers are increasingly turning to Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-3 for HCI research projects. However, these tools raise ethical concerns, particularly when engaging with human subjects. The paper “I’m categorizing LLM as a productivity tool”: Examining ethics of LLM use in HCI research practices provides a critical examination of how HCI researchers approach the ethical dimension of LLMs.
Findings from interviews and surveys reveal that while researchers recognize ethical issues, actions to address them are limited or non-existent.
Key Insights:
In my opinion, this research is essential for framing the conversation about ethics in HCI. It provides a foundation for future guidelines and policy-making, encouraging more responsible research practices. Through awareness and discussion, we can shape the field to address complex ethical questions, ensuring the technology serves humanity positively.
