Brilla AI: AI Contestant in the National Science and Maths Quiz

Brilla AI, a groundbreaking project, integrates AI technologies into Ghana’s prominent National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). Comprising four machine learning systems—speech to text, question extraction, question answering, and text to speech—Brilla AI competed in the 30-year-old quiz. The AI performed admirably, placing second in the Riddles round of the 2023 NSMQ Grand Finale.

Key features of Brilla AI include:

  • Voice recognition and output: Utilizes real-time speech to text and text to speech with a local accent.
  • Question understanding and response: Employs algorithms for extraction and answering questions swiftly.
  • Live competition: Participates real-time thereby setting a benchmark for AI involvement in live educational contests.

Future enhancements could see Brilla AI not just competing, but also providing personalized tutoring and widening access to quality education across Africa. This iteration is a significant step towards democratizing education in regions with limited educational infrastructure.

The project’s significance lies in its potential to serve as a real-world educational tool and its ability to simulate and participate in live knowledge-based competitions, pushing the boundaries of AI application in the educational sector.
